I told my husband. The first thing he said was: "Can they bring back JJ?"

Wow. Now I'm nervous to see who they'll replace him with. Good to see quality control in action Smile

So now that Colin is out, what happens to his script? Does the new director rewrite? I know Thorne is editing but I thought he was massaging Colin's stuff.

@adamdrivershair

I think that the movie moves to December 2019 and they have an overhaul.

Yup. At this point, I think you start over and move the release date.

I enjoyed some of Trevorrow's work, but, like many here, felt very uneasy about his female characters. So, I feel a little bad for him, but this has made me smile. Perhaps they will find a woman director for this trilogy after all.

Great news! I think Rian set the bar too high. Honestly, I feel bad for Colin though..

Can they please hire Rian again? If not, I guess I would approve of JJ. At least he would end the trilogy solving all the mystery boxes.. Very Happy

Saw this on Twitter: http://nerdist.com/j-j-abrams-on-why-ava-duvernay-should-direct-star-wars/ This is an obvious choice, isn't it? And, didn't she advise JJ on the choker shots at the end? Good instincts, there!

In regards to female characters, I wouldn't give Rian a pass either. Does any of his films have notable female characters? None.

Looper had Sara? And it's also an interesting critique of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope.

Let's not forget that Carrie Fisher helped with the script and they both had a blast collaborating.

Good point! Although, the women in Brothers Bloom are ... quirky. Even though one never speaks, if I recall correctly.

But did Carrie have an input on the scenes her character was in, or the entire script?

I would be absolutely shocked if they stuck with the May 2019 release date. Personally I'd rather hey give us an A+++++ quality movie than rush through it. I am very heartened to hear on how committed LF is to giving us a quality product. Whatever Colin was doing had to be pretty bad, as they had just fired the writers and directors for the Han Solo movie. I'm sure they didn't take this decision lightly.

@Saracene TFA did have its flaws, and after picking apart the movie for almost two years, they're bound to show up. Still, what I loved he most is the way I connected with the characters, and not just Rey and Kylo. I loved all of them, and look forward to seeing more.

Some more info on Trevorrow getting sacked. (TL; DR: Script problems):

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/colin-trevorrow-as-director-star-wars-episode-ix-1035463

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that script issues have continued to be a sore spot throughout Episode IX’s development, with Trevorrow having repeated stabs at multiple drafts. In August, Jack Thorne, the British scribe who wrote the upcoming Julia Roberts-Jacob Tremblay movie Wonder, was tapped to work on the script.

Sources say that the working relationship between Trevorrow and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy became unmanageable. Kennedy, who had already been through one director firing/replacement on the Han Solo spinoff movie, was not eager for a sequel and tried to avoid this decision.

@ISeeAnIsland

I wonder if they're even keeping Jack Thorne now that they're bringing in someone who might be fully capable on their own??  I have heard mixed things about him, but haven't really seen enough from him to have an opinion of my own.

The article makes sense and I'm not surprised CT got sacked once push came to shove and the script was due...

Can't say I'm sorry to see Trevorriw go. I can't name a single work of his that I actually liked. I know it's been beat to death, but his portrayal of women in everything is abysmal. I'm willing to push back the release date if it means a better story that does all of the characters justice.

As of right now I would be thrilled if Rian returned or they tapped Patty Jenkins. Either would give Rey the story she deserves without reducing he to a trope and either would humanize Kylo.
