A fun (!) little titbit from a film magazine about Rey's Force-back:

'When Rey opens the case holding Luke's lightsaber, the film hurtles into a 'Force-back' sequence. "J.J. kept calling it 'Rey's acid trip'." laughs Brandon (Maryann Brandon - Editor). "Just to be clear, we did not drop acid before editing that scene!" The shots were thrashed out during a two-day meeting. "We talked a lot about how the light sisde and the dark side are both revealing themselves."

Ok, so that rundown of all the hidden voices was great, great info, thank you. I thought I'd already spotted everything but I was so wrong, jeez.

Particularly interesting is that, according to this video, Ewan McGregor says "This are her first steps". This is odd because I'm pretty sure JJ said the line was "your first steps". Here's the full quote from the interview after the screening for the Writers Guild of America:

"And you hear Obi-Wan at the end say, ‘Rey … these are your first steps,’” Abrams says. “Here’s the cool part. We asked Ewan McGregor to come in and do the line. And he was awesome and we were very grateful. He was incredibly sweet and handsome, and all that stuff. Then he rode off on his motorcycle. Literally the coolest voice over actor ever.”!

I know it sounds like I'm nitpicking, but to me this is an important distinction. Obi-Wan speaking directly to Rey gives a sense of closeness, enough to make me think more strongly about the possibilty of Rey Kenobi (although I'm not very sold on it). It's still pretty significant that his line is the only new one, while the rest are all said in previous movies.

Yes, I did think the bold part too. But I can't shake the feeling she has a darker origin.

Excellent analysis of Rey's vision.  One theme it pointed out that I found Intresting was each moment showed evil triumphing over good; Luke losing to Vader; The Jedi Academy Massacre; and Rey being left behind.  And after watching it I am now convinced the rain sequence (the part that perplexed me the most) happens in the future.  Going with that pattern the times when evil doesn't beat the light is in the last vision predicting Rey and Kylos forest duel.  Rey won, decisively! The rain sequence could be the wild card if the videos prediction is right about it?

Also to note in the aforementioned sequence Obi Wan is quoted as saying the Dark Side will pull you in, when Kylo starts walking towards our heroine.  Possibly hinting Ren will tempt her towards the dark?

I feel like there's just something really odd/off about the KOR-in-the-rain part of the sequence. What we've heard/read about the original intentions for that bit just don't seem to fit with the final version of TFA that we saw. We shall see, I guess.

Is that not just Rey's cloth wrap moving in the wind? That's what it looks like on the HD version at least.

@creepi0 I maybe wrong but after watching the scene, I would said it was a piece of her clothing, it would be clearer in HD but when she stands up from the ground her cloth wrap did moved once due to the wind, even Kylo's clothes move a bit

Re: Rey's Vision

I'm starting to wonder if PH's tweets regarding KOR-in-the-rain are a bit of a misdirect.  Maybe someone can pull up the actual tweets, but haven't they all (on this subject) been prefaced with something to the effect of "the script says..."

So, would it be possible for the script to have stated that this was some sort of clan attack as way to not give away a future important plot point?  I just can't find any way that a "clan attack" makes any sense on a rocky beach with no structures around, especially now that we've been able to determine that most of the "bodies" are actually rocks. And obviously, if it had been described as Kylo Ren saving Rey in the future, that would be an enormous giveaway to the character arcs.

Thoughts?

Re: Rey's Vision

There was a clan attack because clan had Anakin's saber. That was when Maz stole it from Kylo. old script.

However, in the vision, Kylo has Luke's green saber, not Anakin's, so those 2 scenes (Clan attack and Kylo in the rain) don't seem to be the same. Unless someone in production made a serious gaffe and gave him the wrong saber. Or unless he got Luke's before Luke fled.

But considering that he broke the fourth wall like in SKB vision, I'm leaning towards explanation that he breaks the fourth wall cause Rey is present in those events. Unlike events with other characters who don't notice Current!Rey.

Exactly. Plus, when Maz stole the saber in the old script, weren't the KOR supposed to be sitting around a campfire?  You're not going to have a campfire in the pouring rain. I think you're onto something that the "clan attack" and "KOR in the rain" are two separate, unrelated scenes.

The observation about having a campfire in the rain is so true. I always thought it made no sense for that scene to have just been clipped from Maz's lightsaber story. Why not show Maz picking it up? Why make the entire scene about Ren saving "someone"? Chances are it's from the future, as we all suspected.

I wonder at what point in production that change was made. It would have made a lot more sense to show each time the lightsaber changed hands back when the lightsaber (and not the map) was the Macguffin that drove the plot.

Re: Rey's Vision

Post by panki on Tue 19 Apr 2016 - 2:26

I was reading the canon novel Dark Disciple...and it has left me feeling very sad since it is a tragic love story between two grey force sensitives, though the Rey character is male (Quinlan Vos) and the Kylo character is female (Asajj Ventress)....she dies saving his life just after he declares he loves her and wants to leave the jedi order for her.... Sad

But coming to what is relevant to Rey's force vision...Quinlan Vos shares the same ability as Rey to touch objects and get force visions (psychometry) so we get a little more understanding of this ability from the novel. Here are some relevant quotes:

Keeping an expression of mild curiosity on his face, Vos extended himself into the Force, closing his fingers around the object “of no use” and opening to what it had to tell him. He wasn’t concerned about revealing himself to Ventress. His psychometry shell was so smoothly integrated in the Force that no one, not even fellow Jedi masters, had been able to detect it. The bar, with its music and conversations and clinking of glasses, retreated, growing faint and distant. Vos felt as if he were falling forward into a hole, but the sensation was a familiar and comfortable one. Images rushed up: A female Rodian, with gray green skin, holding a blue youngling. It—he—bounced up and down in his mother’s lap excitedly, clutching a small stuffed toy. He warbled as a hand reached out to caress his small cheek, and a face came into Vos’s view. Moregi’s face. Only a glimpse, but it was enough; the Volpai’s movements were gentle and slow, and his expression was kind. Occasionally Vos was able to sense emotions as well as see and hear, and his own heart was suddenly warm with Moregi’s love for both mother and child. Vos mentally disconnected from the Volpai’s feelings and manipulated the image in his mind’s eye, drawing back to take in the rest of the room. He focused on the details, memorizing them quickly: A narrow, bell-shaped window with a potted flowering plant and curtains of blue and yellow. The view out the window showed the angry zigs and zags of graffiti in green and purple paint, in a language he didn’t know. The image faded, and the sights and sounds of the bar returned. Only a few seconds had passed. He handed the of-great-use-after-all object back to Ventress with a noncommittal gesture.

The bow tumbled from his shaking fingers and he stepped back from it. Recovering, he said, “I’m sorry, I—my talent, my psychometry…When I hold an object and focus on it, sometimes I can see and hear things that have happened during its history. And sometimes…sometimes I can feel what happened.

I hope Rey uses this ability more in the sequels.... there was a rumor that Luke is searching for someone in a casino....maybe Rey will use psychometry to track this person.

There is also a scene where Vos touches his master's lightsaber and discovers that the girl he loves killed his master...we get an idea of how it is a skill that can lead to the dark side.

Vos had told her how his psychometry affected him. He received input from sight, sound—and emotions. The Order did not approve of Jedi using such a skill to handle weapons of violence, as the wielder’s feelings could be sensed—and those emotions could lay a Jedi bare to the power of the dark side.

I'm wondering if touching the legacy lightsaber foreshadows Rey going to the dark side at least for some time, especially since that lightsaber has a violent history.

As to the part about Obi-Wan: very interesting. I heard him say "it will tempt you" as well.

I rewatched TFA yesterday and I noticed that in Rey's Force vision Yoda's "luminous beings are we" speech is quoted just before Kylo Ren first appears to Rey: its energy surrounds us, and binds us... Maybe it is a stretch, but that could turn out to be obscure foreshadowing for some kind of a force bond, even a subtle one. We shall see.

You are right. He says "you will be tempted."

"0:09 - Yoda - "Its energy..." (TESB)
0:15 - Yoda - "surrounds us and binds us" (TESB)
0:15 - Luke - "No, no" - (TESB)
0:22 - Obi-Wan - "You will be tempted..." (TESB)
0:24 - Obi-Wan - "but you cannot control it" (TESB)
0:25 - Yoda - "surrounds us" (TESB)
0:26 - Obi-Wan - "The Force will be..." (ANH)
0:36 - Palpatine - "any Jedi" (ROTS)
0:39 - Obi-Wan - "You will do it..." (ESB)
0:40 - Unkar Plutt - "Quiet, girl" (TFA)
0:48 - Obi-Wan - "Rey" (ANH)
0:53 - Obi-Wan - "These are your first steps" (TFA)"

What I've always found curious: in the German dubbed version, Unkar Plutt says to Rey: "Ruhig, Kleiner" which basically means: "Quiet, little boy."

It was reported that it's a synchronisation mistake. I find it funny though. Maybe I am just overanalyzing, but sometimes I believed that Rey has a vision of Ben who was abandonded by his parents and it's not her own memory.

@EchoBase

Using psychometry on weapons is seen as a path to the dark side as one experiences what the previous users of the weapon saw and felt....so it makes sense for the force vision to warn her of the dark side....

@EchoBase

Holy snikes, that made me realize another reason Rey's abandonment on Jakku was in the vision; to make her more sympathetic towards Ben in the next movie.

Everything in the vision revolved around him in some way, except for that instant. By having her defining moment, up to that point, thrust upon her like that she can't help but have some idea of what he went through. Why Ben felt so alone. It's the biggest thing besides the their force link that they have in common.

Both seeing and feeling his history and turmoil will make her more receptive to accepting him. Everything that Rey felt by being dumped on Jakku Ben has as well and know because of the Force Vision she has even more of an understanding of him like no one else can possibly imagine.

@Darth Dementor wrote:Excellent analysis of Rey's vision.

@Darth Dementor

I also think that the KOR in the rain scene is in the future.

He also talks about himself in the interrogation scene when he reads her mind. "You're so lonely, so afraid to leave..." This is exactly what he feels inside. He feels what she feels.

Stumbled across this video that argues the saber belonged to Ben at one point and how Maz came to possess it.

The part I agree with is that he recognized it; sure Ben could have, maybe, seen it on a video or something.  But the certainty, when he screamed the saber belonged to him indicates he saw it with his own eyes and used it at one point, possibly while training.  Further proof that the saber calling to Rey is a sign her and Ben are meant to be together.
