Phasma Novel Discussion (Speculation, Reviews, and Spoilers)

Post by WhatGirl on Sat 2 Sep 2017 - 6:47

I purchased this book today and it has eaten up most of my evening. I'm about a third of the way through and really liking it so far. Let's discuss. Smile

Phasma has all the ambitions of a dark sider for sure. Good thing she doesn't have the Force. I think I might have figured out the twist.
Spoiler:
I feel that she used the poison that she discovered on her home planet to murder Brendol Hux given how he apparently got sick and died mysteriously. And if Cardinal wants to prove that, he will have to somehow obtain a sample as evidence. But we shall see.

@nonesuch mentioned on her blog that Armitage Hux makes an appearance in his bathrobe at some point but I haven't gotten there yet. Laughing

This offers a roundup of the main Phasma plot spoilers for those who want them. I'm not sure I'll bother reading the book, I like the sound of the Leia one more (Nazi slogans aside!)

@WhatGirl

I'm not reading your spoiler tag because I'm only two chapters in so far, but I'm already hooked.

Spoiler:
Not only do I love the appearance of the Pretatorian guard right off the bat, but this person is obviously someone of importance that's going to be fleshed out. It's very unlike Palpatine's Imperial guards who basically stood there for eye candy purposes...

@Iojovi

I'm hooked as well. I really enjoy the writing style, and of course the story is very interesting. I've been so curious about how the FO does things on the inside.

In response to your spoiler tag:
Spoiler:
I actually wasn't sure if Cardinal was a Praetorian guard or not (I'm reading through the book pretty fast), but that makes sense with the red armor.

I bought both. Is everyone reading Phasma first? I'm planning to start one of them after I get my daughter in bed.

@ISeeAnIsland

I picked the Phasma book to read first as basically the luck of the draw. I plan on reading that one and the young Leia book, so I figured it didn't matter.

On a separate note, I attended a panel tonight at DragonCon called From Legends to Canon. The six panelists consisted of those knowledgeable in both the EU and the new canon novels, in addition to the films. One woman panelist said she had finished both the Phasma novel and the Leia novel since midnight last night... Shocked

Someone pointed to her Red Bull and said it explained a lot... Laughing

That panel was very entertaining, even if I'm not as up to date on the EU as some of our other members here....

The Phasma novel is riveting and brutal...I love it! Am only half way through so taking a break and will join the discussion once I am done. Will get to the Leia book after since its full of Holdo references.

I could make a drinking game out of how many times the word 'blood' has been used in the book...

Spoiler:

There are a couple of nods to Kylo in the book so far (not to him directly but other characters in a similar situation)-

1. Two brothers are fighting, and the stronger one tries to avoid killing his weaker brother, the weaker brother kills the stronger one, is shocked and  has has a look as if seeking forgiveness....the girl who cared for the dead guy shoots down the weak brother with a blaster.

2. Phasma is willing to finish what she started and kills her brother, though she has tears in her eyes when remembering her brother and people the night before.

I took a break at the half way mark but then decided to continue....really want to see where it will end. I'm also a little impressed at the resourcefulness of the resistance.

After reading the book, I find it hard to believe the old rumor that Finn will defeat Phasma and cut her arm off....I think Hux has a better chance of being bumped off....she is just too much of a survivor.

I'm on chapter 24, and I think unmasked Phasma
Spoiler:
will be quite scarred in TLJ/IX. She took a beating to the face in an arena-type setting and the wounds were healed but left "pink lines of scars". In other words, she's probably not going to look like she did in the Vanity Fair photoshoot, if she unmasks in the films at all.

Re: Phasma Novel Discussion (Speculation, Reviews, and Spoilers)

Post by vaderito on Sun 3 Sep 2017 - 4:38

Spoilers from Reddit and my comments in green:

Spoiler:

Phasma killed Brendol Hux with a poisonous beetle. Armitage Hux helped plan it.
No one in the First Order has seen Phasma without her helmet.
Phasma will betray/kill anyone, anywhere, anytime, if it helps her. This includes mother, father, brother, niece, close friends, etc.
Phasma is only out for herself. She does not care about the ideals of the First Order. She’s just there because it was, for her, the best option at the time. If and when she finds a better opportunity, she’ll betray the FO in a heartbeat if she thinks it is in her best interests to do so. Quote from the book: "No one will see the real Phasma until the moment when what the First Order wants is no longer what she wants. One day – and it’s coming – Phasma will betray them all." I think this is a reference to opening the hatch that allowed Poe to blow up SKB as she gave in to Finn/Han demand really easily.
FO ships have powerful tractor beams that the Resistance does not know about. The book made a big deal about this and it seemed out of place to me. It makes me wonder if it will play a role in TLJ.
Resistance slicers are much better than FO slicers. The implication is that the resistance can pretty much hack the FO whenever they feel like it. RIP Kylo Warned Leia About SKB Attack. Ever since Jason spoiled what Slicer does, I felt that they were setting up a reveal that slicers send Leia the datacard. And once Matt Martin confirmed that who sent the card was important, I just knew it would be connected with the Slicer and/or DJ. Bummer.
Phasma defeats Cardinal (the only stormtrooper at the same rank) in a fight and leaves him for dead. A Resistance spy rescues him. The story ends there, but it certainly seems like this is set up for something later. Something else later in the books, unless DJ is Cardinal. His "Don't Join" cap may refer to that joining any side is a loss.

I just made it to Chapter Six, and I'm hooked, but it looks like I've got a ways to go to get caught up with everyone else here.

ETA: For those wondering about the red armored trooper, I don't think Cardinal is a Praetorian. Here's one of the official images for the book:

I do find it very interesting that Cardinal was originally from Jakku.

PT "sand" references never get old to me. Laughed at this line (not really a spoiler in any sense):

"I've never walked on sand," Torban noted. "What's it like?"

Phasma's people looked to her, but she nodded to Brendol.

"It shifts under your feet. Coarse and rough. Irritating. Gets everywhere. Slips into your clothes and boots."

Re: Phasma Novel Discussion (Speculation, Reviews, and Spoilers)

Post by snufkin on Sun 3 Sep 2017 - 11:43

So from the Reddit spoilers
speculation:
1. Sounds like killing your family members/parents to get ahead is a thing in Snoke's inner circle if Phasma killed her family as part of leaving her home world. And then together with Hux killed his dad, who had helped her rise up the world. Also, Hux outta watch his back 'cause she'd likely have no problem offing him if it's to her advantage
2. No wonder Kylo got that order from Snoke and unlike Hux and Phasma, he clearly has a conscience about it and it's going to eat away at him.
3. If they've set her up as somebody who will use a situation to advantage her survival until it no longer benefits her and has no loyalty, she's gonna do something pretty awful to protect her own a**, more than likely the hinted duel with Finn.
4. Maybe more character paralleling as somebody given an offer to leave their world/sphere and they took it - whatever happened to make Ben defect to the FO and Rey's experience of being forced off Jakku. Though obviously, she's a foil to Rey. They're both survivors of hardscrabble lives on harsh worlds who live by a certain code which are complete opposites and at odds with one another. Rey is a survivor who places a high value on family and loyalty/help to others.
5. If the rumor about Kylo killing her in the movie pans out, it's gonna be because she threatens another character and it's a final moment showing how he's different and how he's changed to somebody less selfish and more selfless.
6. Character details sort of kills my Big Bad theory because she's clearly not interested in leading the way Hux is, it's about covering her own interests as long as it's convenient

@IoJovi

God, yes! That would be perfect casting!

So, I finished Phasma right before I went to bed last night. I'm dying to talk about it. I LOVED the characters of Vi, Cardinal, and Siv...

spoiler:

And I really hope that we get to see them again, in some capacity. Granted, if they'd wanted to kill them off, they could have done a final chapter/epilogue where Phasma nukes the station where Siv was living while Cardinal and Vi were both there.

On a high, non-spoiler level, I thought that this book served as a nice bridge between Empire's End and TFA:

spoiler:

* As suspected, we do get full confirmation that the Empire remnants did, in fact, regroup and become the First Order in the Unknown Regions.
* Interesting how Cardinal mentioned "the first group of First Order leaders", suggesting that there was a purge of the original Imperial leaders at some point.
* Rae Sloane's fate is still a question mark. There was a vague "if Rae Sloane was still here" remark...making it unclear as to whether she was still alive or not at the time of the story, which took place no more than 6 years before the start of TFA.

We also got another study in contrasts:

spoiler:

I wonder if, sort of like Ransolm Casterfo in Bloodline, Cardinal was meant to be a bit of a stand-in for Kylo Ren:
* Cardinal was set up as a contrast to Phasma and Hux, who were out for their own survival/ambition, versus Cardinal, who truly believed in what the First Order was doing (and was in denial about some of the nastier aspects). Also interesting how the plot point of murdering your own family came up again.
* We got ANOTHER unmasked, non-by-the-books interrogation.
* I found it interesting that Cardinal described (Armitage) Hux in similar words to Novelization Kylo, e.g. "slimy sycophant".
* Like Kylo, Cardinal is just a tool being used by the First Order.

I am at 28%, chapter 15. Too much leisure stuff at the same time so I had to set priorities and Phasma had to wait Smile Now I can focus on it. So far I like it. I especially like that Phasma's story is told not from her perspective but through someone who told someone who is telling someone else. It gives the whole story a touch of myth and one might wonder if it's all true. I also like the tug of war between Cardinal and Vi. The greyness of it all reminds me of Inferno Squad. Seems to become a trademark of SW books. It really feels like war. Although in terms of greyness, I'd say that

Spoiler:
Phasma does not seem to move herself in the greyness zone, but is standing rather firmly in the black zone.

Brendol Hux reminds me of some managers in my company. So depending on what he does, he gets the face of manager A, B or C in my head.

@SanghaRen

I'm at exactly the 50% mark, and I'm absolutely loving it.  It really is a page turner.  I saw it described as Mad Max meets Star Wars and that's about as accurate as it gets.

Oh yes, the characters are pretty grey.  Even Phasma I think starts out that way, but she gets progressively darker as the story goes on.

Spoiler:
I can't imagine living that way among her people.  Grey or black, she and the rest of her tribe are tough cookies!  Although both dark characters, I really like the contrast between her and Brendol Hux.  It's clear the two are worlds apart.  I really do hope she is the one who ultimately killed him.  He's a coward in the worst possible way.

I agree. Most of the characters seem to be pretty firmly "grey".

Another thing that I forgot to bring up that I thought was interesting:

spoiler:

Vi offers Cardinal a full pardon to leave the First Order and come to the Resistance. (If I remember correctly, she makes this offer more than once.)

Given that Cardinal is fairly high-ranking within the FO, I wonder if this might be a hint of how a redeemed Ben Solo might be offered a pardon, if he ends up helping the Resistance.

I noticed that as well and immediately thought it might foreshadow Kylo defecting to the resistance by episode 9...but on second thought, it could also mean Phasma tries to change sides when she thinks the FO is losing. (I hope that isn't the case though) Suspect

@panki

Yes, I was thinking about Kylo too for that, but

Spoiler:
are we sure Vi is telling the truth? A full pardon sounds like a big thing, unless they put him under witness protection with only a few people knowing about it. The main crowd will never accept that - cf the Vader reveal in Bloodline - and I could imagine that even within the Resistance some will never accept it. But yeah, that alleged scene of Leia slapping Poe could be him not being happy about Kylo getting a bargain for his help in bringing down the FO.

Phasma leaving when it gets too troublesome to her taste would not surprise me, but I can't imagine Leia falling for that.

@SanghaRen

@ISeeAnIsland

I noticed that as well and immediately thought it might foreshadow Kylo defecting to the resistance by episode 9...but on second thought, it could also mean Phasma tries to change sides when she thinks the FO is losing. (I hope that isn't the case though)  Suspect
@panki

@SanghaRen

Spoiler:
I think Vi is telling the truth because Poe was ready to give the traitor who caused the death of his surrogate uncle a chance to explain himself and return to the resistance....the resistance seems the sort to give second chances. Also, I'm not convinced Poe's slap is because of Kylo....I think it might be due to Holdo driving a wedge between Leia and Poe, since she is his main antagonist.

My worry for Kylo is that although Cardinal is a senior member of the FO, he was associated with training young FO cadets not war crimes....while Kylo is known for being Snoke's enforcer and executioner....he almost executed Admiral Ackbar but Poe rescued him in the 11th hour....so am a little worried that the resistance might not accept him as easily as they accepted cardinal.

Phasma on the other hand is a survivor....I wont be surprised if she kills and dresses one of those other tall FO blondes (a few of them have turned up in a comics) in her armour and defects to the resistance.
